A Super Moon Is Coming

The moon is going to seem bigger than it ever has before

In March of 1983, we had a chance to view a Super Full Moon. With a Super Full Moon, the moon whereby one side is closer to the earth than usual. The result is a super full moon which is considerably bigger than a normal full moon.

On March 19th of 2011, we are going to get the chance to see another Super full moon for the first time in over 20 years. There was almost a Super moon in December on 2008 but the moon never reached the Super full moon status which it will in a few days.

Most of the public will not notice that the moon is bigger - after all the moon will only appear to be 14% larger than usual. However, for those of us that study and are fascinated by the moon - a 14% increase will be very spectacular to see.

There is a common belief that the extreme Super moon will cause natural disasters and strong storms. This however does not seem to be the case, as Super Moons in the past haven't been directly tied to any natural disaster.

So should try and embrace this Super moon, as it clearly doesn't come around every day and it will be fun on April 18th when we have our next full moon to be able to mentally compare it to the Super moon that will occur this Saturday.
