Web hosting guide: How to Move/ Transfer your website hosting with ZERO DOWNTIME This guide will help you transfer your website from one webhosting company (A) to another (B). 1) Do not touch your previous host yet. DO NOT CHANGE YOUR NAMESERVERS JUST YET NOR DELETE YOUR CURRENT WEB HOST! (company A) 2) Order your new account Establish the new hosting account with company B. 3) Wait for your account details. Company B will inform you (probably in a "welcome" email) about your new account settings: 3.a) Your URL address to login to the web hosting control panel 3.b) An additional temporal URL address to login to the web hosting control panel (this URl does not contain your domain name, therefor can be used immediatelly) 3.c) A temporal URL address from where you can see the contents of your site on the new provider before anything goes live. 3.d) Your FTP upload username and password 3.e) Your Frontpage upload username and password (most probably the same as the FTP account) 3.f) Your domain name servers (typically 2 server names with their IP addresses) 4) Check the control panel. Use the temporal URL address (3.b) to login to the web hosting control panel. Check the features of your account. All the features you expect to have should be there. 5) Upload your site Use the temporal URL settings (3.d or 3.e) to upload your website content to the new provider. 6) Check before going live Check your site from the temporal http:// URL that they gave you (3.c). Check all pages, graphics, links, custom codes that you have created. 7) Create email accounts Use the temporal URL (3.b) to login to the control panel and create all the emails that you had on the previous hosting company. 8) Make the switch Go to your registrar and change your "name servers" to those that are mentioned in the welcome email. 9) Your site will be updated WORLDWIDE within 24-72 hours. Note: although you may be able to see your site is on your new server within possibly 12 hours, please allow a complete 72 hour cycle before you delete your old host. 10) delete the old hosting account in the previous webhosting company (A). |
